Guide to Camborne in Cornwall

Camborne has a rich industrial past in Tin and Copper mining and the area accounted for two thirds of the Worlds copper production with 350 pits and fifty thousand workers during its heyday in the 19th century.

The Cornish Mines and Engines at Pool is an intriguing insight into the world of mining and miners. At the centre of the site housed in the engine houses are the two impressive beam engines, introduced by Cornish Engineer Richard Trevithick they were originally powered by high pressure steam and today one can be seen working by electricity.

Trevithick Cottage once home to Richard Trevithick who used Camborne as his trial ground for a self propelled steam carriage and claimed to be the first steam railway locomotive is nearby at Penponds.

Just south of Cornish Mines and Engines is the Mineral Tramways Discovery Centre focusing on the tramways built during the mining heyday the area is now being restored with 60km of activity trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders to follow the routes of the old tramways and railways used to carry ore and supplies to and from the tin and copper mines.
