Guide to Fowey in Cornwall

 

The town of Fowey is situated on the south coast of Cornwall in an area of outstanding natural beauty known as the south eastern coast. The town has a rich and varied history and has many places of interest within the town and sorrounding area well worth exploring.

Fowey has been Cornwalls major south coast port since the 14th century and was the leading port for china clay exports in the 19th century you can still see its strong maritime presence today with freighters, trawlers and yachts filling its harbour area and it's annual regatta week a popular event attracting thousands of visitors.

Daphne du Maurier spent many of her creative years in and around Fowey and a nine day Daphne du Maurier festival each year celebrates this fact with walks, talks and concerts along the literary theme. The 15th century church of St Fimbarrus dominates Foweys steep centre and marks the traditional end of the Saints Way a long distance path from Padstow in the north of Cornwall.

There are many wonderful walks to be had in and around Fowey with exhilarating coastal walks taking in sheltered bays and quiet beaches to inland walks like Hall Walk a four mile circular walk north of the village passing through little hamlets and ancient monuments. Fowey also has its fair share of quality restaurants serving locally caught fish and interesting pubs with a great welcoming atmosphere.
