Guide to Mevagissey in Cornwall

The small port of Mevagissey on the South Cornwall coast 6 miles south of St Austell was once famed for the fast ships constructed here and the transporting of contraband. Today it is mainly tourists that flock to see its small harbour, pretty fisherman’s cottages and wander through the narrow alleyways.

The Mevagissey museum is housed in a building built in 1795 and used for the construction and repairs of smugglers boats today it has collections of local historic events.

Just outside Mevagissey are the awesome Lost Gardens of Heligan the gardens were in their prime in the late 1800’s but were neglected for many years until being recently rescued under the instigation of Tim Smit who discovered them in 1990. The restoration process has been ongoing ever since and has been the subject of several television programmes.
