Guide to Tintagel in Cornwall

The village of Tintagel lies seven miles north east of Port Isaac on the north coast of Cornwall and along with Tintagel Castle is most famous for its links with the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

The ruins of the 13th century castle are spectacular and were once a Norman stronghold occupied by the Earls of Cornwall but it was during the 6th century that the legends surrounding King Arthur surfaced with Celtic warlords uniting local tribes and fighting invading Anglo-Saxons.

The myths were inflated over the centuries with a twelfth century chronicler Geoffrey of Monmouth popularizing the notion that Tintagel was Arthur’s birthplace.

South of Tintagel the coast is wild and unspoiled with some steep and strenuous walking but the sandy beaches along the route make the effort worthwhile.

Trebarwith Strand is reached by a passage through the rocks, with high surrounding cliffs the beach is only accessible at low tide but it is considered one of the best beach breaks in the country attracting surfers far and wide.

A breathtaking approach to the castle is from Glebe Cliff west of Tintagel with the South West Coastal Path close by.
